42 Fall Basics Our Editors Are Obsessing Over

We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

I was recently on a call with our Design Editor, Kristen, who claimed she was entering her “fancy girl era.” Immediately, I wanted to adopt the same mantra—and it’s clear I’m not alone. The pandemic’s resurgence of sweatpants and aughts-centric trends has made way for a new push toward quiet luxury. We want more from our clothes, and as a result, prioritize and invest in pieces that will look good for years to come. Luckily, the best fall basics achieve exactly that, letting you curate an autumn wardrobe you’ll love wearing from now until spring.

I’ve experienced quite the glow-up over the years. And while some of that is the result of a bit more disposable income since graduating college, I’d attribute it mostly to intention. Nowadays, I’m choosing to keep my closet edited down to pieces that align with the three words that describe my personal style: elegant, feminine, and understated. By refining my style goals to what makes me feel most myself, it’s easier to say no to what doesn’t fit.

How to Curate Your Personal Style

My Pinterest style board has become my go-to source of inspiration for these sartorial shifts. I’ve made it a monthly ritual to sift through and delete images that no longer spark joy, while eagerly importing fresh looks from my Instagram saves.

This consistent practice has not only helped me define and evolve my personal aesthetic but has also streamlined my shopping list. The process is simple: gather your favorite inspiration images, crank up a fun playlist, and see how many looks you can recreate with your current fall wardrobe. Trust me, that’s where the best fall basics shine!

The Best Fall Basics to Wear This Season

Go through this process once, and you’ll quickly realize that you need to track down the perfect sweater, jacket, or pair of boots to take your wardrobe to the next level. With this method, I’ve transformed my closet from an uninspired collage of trends to a collection full of the best fall basics and neutral colors that I can endlessly mix and match.

But know this: The perfect closet doesn’t have to be a rigid capsule wardrobe. However, it does have to withstand trends and reflect who you are. With that in mind, keep scrolling for the best fall basics and autumn essentials.

Outerwear

Outerwear can always be a bit tricky during this transitional season. Some days, you might wake up needing your heaviest coat, while on others, you can get by without this outfit topper. I love this year’s obsession with the barn jacket—it’s a classic piece that’s perfect for these not-too-hot, not-too-cold months. In a neutral color, it will layer just as easily over a t-shirt and jeans as on any other fall outfit. Pretend you’re in the British countryside and your wardrobe will take care of the rest.

Of course, every timeless wardrobe also needs a good leather jacket. And while many real-deal picks will set you back hundreds in price, affordable options abound that look even better. Whatever your outerwear selection, consider these pieces your ticket to cool girl fall.

Dresses

Nap dresses are forever, but we love the simple, streamlined ease of a slip dress. To wear mine throughout the year, I simply employ different styling tactics that keep me warm and seasonally appropriate. In the summer, I’ll pair mine with sandals, and in the fall, I like to layer up with tights, a cozy sweater, lug sole boots, and a scarf to top things off. And in this season’s trending chocolate brown? Chef’s (stylist’s) kiss.

A-line dresses are also perfect for fall—reflecting the timeless tailoring and universally flattering shape so many of us are loving right now. Perfect for work, lunch, or a wine night by the fire, these pieces will easily become your go-to. A-line cuts are the ideal mix of flattering and fitted while also being unbelievably comfy. Throw on a pair of statement earrings and you’re all set—this is a one-and-done sort of outfit.

Lastly, every fall’s pièce de résistance: the sweater dress. She’s comfy, she’s flattering and forgiving, and she keeps you warm without looking like you put on every last layer in your closet. Not only do sweater dresses automatically make you look put together, but they take all the effort out of planning an outfit. I love mixing mine with knee-high heeled boots for a casual, yet chic seasonal look.

Tops

Tops can be tricky during a season when we’re all gravitating toward sweaters. But! They also make my favorite fall pastime (layering) so seamless and chic. I love a denim button-down that serves as the topper to the foolproof Canadian tuxedo outfit formula. Or, try one in a fall-appropriate plaid and a fun flourish of detail to add visual interest.

I’m also enjoying asymmetrical tops that flatter every body thanks to the diagonal lines that draw the eye in a way that creates a more streamlined silhouette. Go even bolder with a one-shoulder top—they’re perfect for a date night or dinner out.

Sweaters

When the temperatures begin to dip, I start to crave chunky woven knits. But even during the coziest season of the year, I like to keep my looks streamlined. Cardigans, crewnecks, and my favorite—turtlenecks—are in abundance this time of year. Thankfully, plenty of brands offer styles at a range of prices, putting even the most luxe sweaters in reach. The options I’ve shared below each boast five-star reviews and won’t pill (just be mindful to follow the care instructions to a tee).

I envision cozying up in these sweaters with a full monochromatic look, head to toe. This styling trick makes for a relaxed outfit while still feeling chic, and can look cozy, classy, or sexy depending on how you style it. (Bonus: You’ll reach for it whenever you need an extra layer of comfort when working from home.)

Bottoms

Especially this year, with barrel-leg pants and denim making waves, it’s obvious that trends come and go. However, one shape that lives in my closet forever is a high-waisted, wide-leg pant. I find they’re flattering even on my petite frame (re: they don’t overwhelm me) and pair beautifully with any sweater or top—though I like to go a bit more fitted for visual balance. Depending on the material, they always look chic and are easy to dress up for a night out or a casual look with sneakers and a tee. Trust me: select one of the pairs below and you’re guaranteed to always get compliments.

Shoes

I only buy shoes about once every other season, so I want to know I’m making the right investment. I recently purchased Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flat in red and am obsessed with how the shoe adds a vibrant pop of color to my oftentimes more subdued fall outfits. Similarly, my knee-high boots are a go-to pick with just about everything I’m wearing this time of year. They look perfectly mod paired with a shorter plaid skirt and sweater or cottagecore-chic with my longer, prairie-esque dresses.

Across any shoe style, keeping things classic in the fall will guide you toward a pair that will last you forever. With timelessness as your intention, you’ll be led to shoes that pair beautifully with just about any style or aesthetic.

Accessories

Accessories are so fun in the fall, with the chillier weather letting you pile on scarves and hats with reckless, sartorial abandon. Suede is this season’s hottest material, and I love how it can pop up in a bag, belt, or any detail to let your outfit shine. But if you buy one accessory this season, make it a classic pair of hoops. I’m still loving the silver trend, and everything from Heaven Mayhem will be an instant heirloom. They’ll elevate any outfit you wear this season.
