DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro arrives with 4-hour battery life, 13.5-stop dynamic range

GoPro’s Hero 13 Black has some real competition now in the form of DJI’s newly announced Action 5 Pro. DJI advertises a “groundbreaking” 13.5-stop dynamic range and four-hour battery life from its 1,950 mAh battery. Even at -20° C (-4°F), it can record for up to 3.6 hours. Compare all of these numbers to the “industry average for action camera battery life” of 2 hours, and you’ll definitely be impressed. What’s more, if you use DJI’s 30W USB-C charger you can get 2 hours of shooting from a 15-minute charge.

The camera has a 1/1.3″ sensor with 2.4 μm pixel size. It can shoot 4K video at 60fps in low light, capturing “intricate shadow details without overexposing highlights”, according to the official press release. There’s also a SuperNight mode with AI noise reduction that’s promised to “yield cleaner and clearer footage”.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro comes with built-in subject centering and tracking, powered by machine learning algorithms. It can go 20m deep into the water without a case, while the built-in color temperature sensor captures true to life colors under the sea. You can even set it to automatically start recording when submerged and stop after surfacing. Its pressure gauge records underwater depth, duration, and altitude data to ensure your safety.

The camera’s OLED displays have a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, and the screen-to-body ratio is now 16% better thanks to the bigger panel and narrower bezels. The Osmo Action 5 Pro can connect directly to the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter via Bluetooth for ultra high sampling rate audio recording without the need for a receiver.

You get 47GB of storage, high-speed transfers of up to 80MB/s via Wi-Fi 6 or USB 3.0, Wi-Fi livestreaming support, Timecode to sync footage from multiple cameras, pre-rec that starts recording before you hit Record, and Highlight to quickly mark key moments to ease your editing.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro is available now in two packages. The Standard Combo is $349 and includes the camera itself of course, the Osmo Action Extreme Battery Plus (1,950 mAh), Osmo Action Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame, Osmo Action Quick-Release Adapter Mount, Osmo Action Curved Adhesive Base, Osmo Locking Screw, Type-C to Type-C PD Cable, Osmo Action 5 Pro Rubber Lens Protector, Osmo Action 5 Pro Glass Lens Cover, and Osmo Action Anti-Slip Pad.

The Adventure Combo at $449 adds the Osmo Action Quick-Release Adapter Mount (mini), Osmo Action Multifunctional Battery Case, and Osmo 1.5m Extension Rod.
