A former Trump aide, federal prosecutor, and assistant public defender, Patel pledged to work with the FBI’s employees to “rebuild an FBI the American people can be proud of.”
President Donald Trump‘s nominee to lead the FBI, former Department of Defense Chief of Staff Kash Patel, has now been confirmed.
On February 13, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced his nomination with a 12-10 vote. On Thursday, February 20, Patel was narrowly confirmed with a 51-49 vote.
A former Trump aide, federal prosecutor, and assistant public defender, Patel pledged to work with the FBI’s employees to “rebuild an FBI the American people can be proud of.”
“The American people deserve an FBI that is transparent, accountable, and committed to justice,” Patel posted on social media after his confirmation. “The politicalization of our justice system has eroded public trust — but that ends today.”
Find out all about him below.
Patel is now the FBI director following his confirmation hearing on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Formerly the Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense (DoD), Patel is also a well-known defense lawyer and federal prosecutor. During President Trump’s first term, he served as senior counsel for the House Intelligence Committee.

Patel was born in Garden City, New York. He is the son of immigrants, and his parents are originally from India and they taught him the Hindu faith. Patel provided a loving tribute to his parents in an op-ed in the Washington Street Journal.
In it, he shared that he would represent: “Not only the dreams of my parents, but the hopes of millions of Americans who stand for justice, fairness, and the rule of law. My commitment to these principles is deeply rooted in my family’s history. My father fled Idi Amin’s genocidal dictatorship in Uganda. My mother was born in Tanzania. They married in India and emigrated to New York, where I was born and raised in a bustling household that included my father’s seven siblings, their spouses and six children.”
His parents first immigrated to Canada to escape anti-Indian persecution in the 1970s.

In 2014, according to The New York Times, Patel participated in an Above the Law charity bachelor auction benefiting the Switchboard of Miami but later dropped out after a blogger pointed out that his law license appeared to be outdated in the state.
Patel does not have any children.
Patel’s net worth is now an estimated $5 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, a significant increase from the previously reported $800,000.
A recent financial disclosure also revealed that he earned at least $2.6 million over the past year alone.
