The bad news is, we’ll have to wait quite a while for the third season of Will Trent.
The show is set to return midseason, which means fans will have to wait until very late 2024 or even early 2025 for more of their favorite special agent and his chihuahua companion.
But the good news is that that patience is sure be rewarded, thanks to a major addition to what is already one of the most talented and likable casts on TV.
Deadline is reporting today that Gina Rodriguez (no relation to titular star Ramon Rodriguez) will be joining the cast as a series regular.
Gina previously charmed audiences as the lead in Jane the Virgin and the sadly short-lived Not Dead Yet, which was canceled in May after two seasons on ABC.
According to Deadline, Rodriguez will “portray Marion Alba, a charismatic, confident Assistant District Attorney new to Atlanta.”
In the classic style of lighthearted procedurals, circumstances will force the two to work together despite their initial dislike of one another.
“After her first encounter with Will falls flat, the pair is surprised to learn that they must work together to investigate a crime in the world of Atlanta gangs,” the report continues.
Will, of course, already has a complex relationship with Angie (Erika Christensen), so could the addition of Rodriguez lead to a love triangle situation?
It might all feel a little too familiar, too trope-y on other shows, but thus far, Will Trent has done a fine job of upending our expectations and offering something different.
In a TV landscape that’s not exactly overflowing with originality, Trent, in its first two seasons has been a welcome breath of fresh air.
That’s one reason why the news of the show’s extra-long hiatus was greeted with a collective exasperated sigh from viewers.
But hey — if showrunners Karin Slaughter, Liz Heldens, and Daniel T. Thompson are gonna use this as an opportunity to further hone the edges of ABC’s sharpest show, we’re fine with it.
The addition of Gina Rodriguez is an excellent sign — an indication that both producers and network are going all-in on the task of making Will Trent Season 3 the show’s strongest outing yet.
What do you think, TV fanatics?
Are Will Trent’s best storylines still ahead of it? Are you excited about the addition of a beloved TV vet like Rodriguez?
