As part of a last-minute change of plans, the Cleveland Browns announced they will wear their 1946 throwback uniforms during Sunday’s game at the Cincinnati Bengals, which kicks off at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
The Browns debuted the all-white throwback uniforms, which feature a traditional striping pattern on the sleeves and drop shadow numbers, as part of their 75th anniversary celebration in 2021.
However, they were initially paired with orange helmets that featured a single white stripe down the middle, brown jersey numbers on the sides and gray facemasks due to the NFL’s one-helmet rule.
The league scrapped that rule in 2022, allowing Cleveland to introduce a new white helmet – complete with the Browns’ current striping pattern and a brown facemask – the following season.
Cleveland is currently 2-3 in this uniform combination, including a 20-16 loss at the Las Vegas Raiders back on Sept. 29 and a 21-7 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend.
The Browns were also scheduled to wear the throwback uniforms during their 41-32 loss to the Denver Broncos on Dec. 2, but opted to wear their standard road design that evening instead.
This was likely prompted by the debut of the Broncos’ white alternate helmets, as well as the Bengals’ decision to wear orange pants with their standard orange helmets and black home jerseys this afternoon.
